Dubai is a diversified economy focused in a number of key areas amongst which include tourism, logistics and transport as well as manufacturing. In fact, manufacturing accounts for nearly 10% of the GDP and this figure is set to increase over the forthcoming period with the establishment of the Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030 that seeks to make the manufacturing sector more sizeable than its current level. However, such an ambitious initiative will have the potential to lead to negative sustainability impacts namely the increase in the demand for resources such as electric and water, as also the potential for environmental impacts. Therefore Dubai’s industrial sector strong participation will be key in supporting the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) ambitious energy efficiency targets – to reduce Dubai's electricity and water consumption by 30% by 2030.
Dubai Government seeks to proactively work on several initiatives that will mitigate such impacts and one such is the establishment of the Dubai Green Star Awards for the manufacturing sector that encourages industries in Dubai to reduce its carbon footprint despite the new focus on industrial growth in Dubai. Under this initiative, Dubai Exports, an Agency of the Department of Economic Development, Government of Dubai, in collaboration with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), Etihad ESCO, and TAQATI has instituted these awards that seek to reward industries that demonstrate appreciable reduction of their impact on the environment and electric and water consumption.
The Awards will promote companies for outstanding performance in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, thereby highlighting them as leading role models in Dubai. In doing so, it is hoped that companies will adopt technology and innovation related to energy efficiency and related sustainability initiatives. The companies that take steps to become energy efficient will be recognized through a system of rewards knowns as
